Ruth Mateus-Berr
is an artist, scientist, multisensual design researcher She was born in Vienna in
1964
She graduated in 1983 from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and received
in 2002 a doctorate for her research on the design of the Carnival at the times
of the National Socialism (Univ Prof Manfred Wagner, Univ Prof Karl Vocelka)
Since 1992 she has worked as an art and design ass professor at the University
of Applied Arts at the Department for Design, Architecture and Environment for
Art & Design Education with Univ Prof Ernst Beranek and Univ Prof James
Skone

Her artwork deals with interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary questions and
is situated at the interface of science, art & design Her work has been presented
at exhibitions in Austria and abroad (China, USA, Italy )
She has conducted sensual design workshops and presented lectures at different
universities (Rutgers University/DIMACS, NJ USA; Estonian Academy of
Arts, Tallin, Estonia; University of Applied Arts Vienna, University of Music and
Performing Arts Vienna) and organized the symposium “The Skin of the City”(2008) and the lectures “TastDuftWien” (TouchSmellVienna) at the University of
Applied Arts in Vienna between 2007–2009

She is a member of the research team of the project “Haptic and olfactory design
Resources for Vienna’s Creative Industries” at the University of applied arts
of Vienna and a member of the art(s) and science project for spatial parameters
for science center exhibits with the Science Centre Network in Vienna In 2007 she
won the Neptun (contemporary) art award on the visualization of science by Dr
Rita Colwell who works on water resources In 2010 she was nominated in the
MAK/departure call: Project Vienna – A Design Strategy. How to react to a City?, together
with Prof Hashem Akbari, clima research Heat Island Group at Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory & Concordia University Montreal
